Stern John's self-titled album is the first full band release from the legendary Southend Folk Punk trio of Paul Offord, Craig Brown and Morgan Condon. It captures the band tackling themes of inequality, greed and loss through the prism of hope and community. Allegorical tales of everyday life on the Thames Estuary betray wider universal themes. The album was recorded in stages over 2025 and captures the energy of the band's live performances. A classic DIY authenticity permeates the approach where live single-takes were preferred over isolated tracks. Singles 'TEA', 'Burrows and Offord' and 'Wet & Windy' highlight the range of influences and styles across the album from angry punk to sentimental, beautiful folk harmonies. The album includes Stern John's unique take on Woody Guthrie's 'Deportees', an ever present inclusion in live sets that's always relevant but has a deep personal connection to the band. Producer Barry Streek brought new ideas and new textures to the more stripped back sound. Final polish was applied at AIR studios in London. Plans are already in place to follow this release with new material in the coming 12 months. Go to the Shows page to keep up to date with when Stern John are playing near you.
